General Motors to spend billions on electric pickups and SUVs

GMC

In November 2019, Tesla introduced its first Cybertruck electric pickup truck, and Ford had previously announced its plans to produce a similar model. Concern General Motors is not going to remain in debt and in the near future will also join the fight for buyers in this segment.

According to the press service of GM, at the end of 2021, the concern is going to launch the production of its first all-electric pickup truck, however, to launch it into production, it is necessary to significantly modernize the Hamtramke, Michigan plant. For this, the concern is ready to allocate funds in the amount of $2.2 billion, and after the reconstruction, only electric vehicles will be produced there - this will be the first such GM plant. On the basis of a pickup truck, an SUV of the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) class will also be released. The specified amount includes only the renewal of the plant, the development of electric vehicles is financed separately.

The start of the modernization of the enterprise is scheduled for the end of February 2020, with its reconstruction the number of workers will be increased from 900 to 2200.

There is still little information about the future GM electric truck. In 2019, concern CEO Mary Barra said in an interview with Reuters that the new pickup truck will be very multitasking, versatile.

In addition to pickups and SUVs, GM will produce the Cruise Origin electric taxi equipped with autonomous driving at the plant. It is quite possible that other GM models will soon be endowed with the same ability.
