Crossovers popular in the US market were tested in a small overlap crash test. This time the tests concerned the passenger side of the cars and revealed interesting results.
The authors of the test from the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety IIHS took eight popular SUVs: KIA Sorento, Volkswagen Atlas, GMC Acadia, Toyota Highlander, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer. As a result, only the first three cars received a good rating - for all the rest, the situation turned out to be worse. For some reason, the testers did not publish a detailed video from the KIA Sorento.
The worst performance was demonstrated by the Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee. In these cars, as a result of hitting a barrier with a 25% overlap on the passenger side, too little margin of safety of the power structure of the body was revealed - individual structural elements penetrated 25-40 cm deep into the cabin.
In the Grand Cherokee, after the impact, the dummy's head was completely outside the car, as the side airbag did not work properly.
Ford representatives have already said that the updated version of Ford will protect the driver and passenger equally effectively.
As a reminder, the IIHS has twice tested cars hitting the 25 percent barrier on the passenger side, and each time the tests found discrepancies with the strength indicators for the driver's side test.
