Ford Motor engineers have developed a system that effectively combats fogging of windows in cars. It monitors the parameters of the air in the cabin and begins to function even before the settled moisture worsens the view.
The Windscreen Weather Station is capable of detecting increases in air humidity as well as registering changes in glass temperature. If there is a risk of condensation, it automatically turns on the air conditioner and selects the optimal airflow setting to prevent fogging of the windshield.
The device is a separate box measuring 5 x 3 cm. It is installed on the glass next to the rear-view mirror. The gadget consists of several sensors that analyze the parameters of the air in the cabin. Separately, it is noted that the Windscreen Weather Station can even reduce fuel consumption and harmful emissions by reducing the use of the air conditioning compressor.
The new system is designed primarily for outdoor sports enthusiasts. Usually, after outdoor activities (for example, running), a hot person gets into the car, which, coupled with rapid breathing, leads to a sharp increase in humidity levels and, as a result, increases the likelihood of fogging the windows. Germany saw a 42% increase in runners in 2020 due to restrictions on indoor sports amid COVID-19, according to the latest count.
Windscreen Weather Station has already begun to be installed on the Kuga and Explorer crossovers. The system is offered from the factory, the possibility of understaffing previously released cars is not reported.
