Ford electric cars will be able to recharge each other

Ford

Ford Motor will build reverse charging technology into its F-150 Lightning electric pickups and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid hybrids, meaning they can recharge other electric vehicles. This feature will become available on vehicles with the Pro Power Onboard system, which is a 240V outlet for powering external devices.

By connecting a Ford Mobile Power Cord to an F-150 Lightning or F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid, you can increase your range by 36 km in one hour for a Mustang Mach-E SUV, 21 km for an F-150 Lightning pickup truck, or 16 km - for Ford E-Transit van.

Pro Power Onboard is already available for the F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid. On cars of the 2021 model year, it develops power up to 7.2 kW. In the F-150 Lightning, its return will be 9.6 kW. At the same time, recharging other electric vehicles is only one of the options for using the built-in socket. The main purpose is to power a variety of power tools. Ford F-150 is the most popular pickup truck in the US, it is massively purchased by companies from different sectors of the economy, so this opportunity is not superfluous, in particular, for builders, emergency workers and other professionals.

The F-150 Lightning was unveiled in May and will be delivered to the US market in the spring of 2022. It is planned to produce two versions of the F-150 Lightning: with a standard battery (432 hp, cruising range - 370 km) and increased (571 hp and 482 km). The torque in both cases is 1051 Nm. Battery capacity - 98 or 131 kWh. The top model is capable of accelerating from 0 to 96 km/h (60 mph) in just 4.4 seconds.

Earlier in December, the company announced that it had already collected 200,000 orders for the supply of F-150 Lightning pickups. On the first day after the announcement of the new model, Ford received 20,000 pre-orders, which included a $100 refundable deposit. At the same time, in 2022 the company will be able to produce only 15,000 electric pickups. Because of this, Ford even stopped accepting new applications in early December.

Other EV manufacturers have begun experimenting with reverse charging as well. Hyundai is offering it for the Ioniq 5, Volkswagen will introduce a similar system in 2022.
