Ferrari is not going to "bury" its naturally aspirated V12 engine

Ferrari

Italian supercar maker Ferrari will continue to develop its naturally aspirated V12 engine despite the global trend towards turbo-hybrid powertrains. This was stated by the head of marketing and commercial director of the brand Enrico Galliera in an interview with Top Gear.

According to him, the V12 engine is the heart of Ferrari, and the company wants to keep its production. This is hindered by strict environmental regulations introduced in the EU and the USA. By the way, since 2021 in the EU countries there is a limit on the level of emissions for sold new cars - 95 grams of CO2 per kilometer. At the same time, while the average figure in fact is 112 g / km. For every extra gram from every car sold, car companies will be required to pay €95. For a 730-horsepower 6.3-liter Ferrari V12 engine, this figure is 350 g / km, for the flagship 830-horsepower 6.5 engine (it is installed on the new 812 Competizione model), the Italian brand has not yet published these data, but they may be even higher .

Enrico Galliere is echoed by the technical director of the brand, Michael Leiters. According to him, the potential of branded V12 engines is still not exhausted, and they can be more powerful and efficient. “Certainly, we have to do a lot of research and development in order to preserve, as Enrico already called, this pillar of Ferrari, but nothing is impossible,” added Galliere.

To squeeze 830 hp out of the 812 Competizione 6.5 830 hp engine, Italian engineers changed the shape of the pistons, the engine connecting rods are made of titanium (40% lighter than steel), a different crankshaft and a carbon coating of the camshafts are also used, which helps reduce friction. The maximum rpm has been increased from 8900 to 9500 per minute.
