Chevrolet may "bury" the legendary Camaro coupe

Chevrolet

Disturbing rumors appeared in automotive publications for fans of American muscle cars. They report that General Motors is not satisfied with the current sales dynamics of the Chevrolet Camaro, and this project may soon be closed.

This information was distributed by the Muscle Cars and Trucks portal. According to insiders, in the coming years, General Motors will study the sales dynamics of the Camaro, and if it remains at a low level, the model will sink into oblivion in 2023 - at the end of its life cycle. Recall that the current sixth generation Camaro has been produced since 2016.

Other publications immediately after this news began to storm the press service of General Motors, but in response they received only information that the coupe will acquire a modification of the LT1 in the fall, and a version of the Camaro SS with a body kit from the Camaro Shock concept car is also expected. Without confirming the information that the model will receive a new generation, General Motors thereby indirectly confirmed that clouds were gathering over the Camaro.

The position of this bright car in comparison with the inveterate "enemies" in the face of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger has really deteriorated. The Camaro sold just under 51,000 units in the US last year, while the Mustang sold over 75,000 units. The Dodge Challenger is also strong: last year, the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles brand sold 66,716 copies of this model, and this despite the fact that the car is based on the very old Chrysler LX platform, which traces its ancestry to the Chrysler 300 sedan from the mid-2000s . But in recent years, Dodge has properly advertised the Challenger Hellcat and Challenger Demon modifications, once again showing that even an old car weighing more than two tons (the Camaro is lighter by almost 300-350 kg, depending on the version) can be successfully sold by installing under the hood car forced big block.

Adding fuel to the fire is the news that appeared yesterday on the Autoevolution portal: the former head of the GM concern, Bob Lutz, said that Chevrolet needs to bring a competitor to the Porsche Cayenne to the market, and this will, of course, require either expanding production capacity or reducing the current model range. It is quite possible that now the management of the concern is considering which way to go.
