Chevrolet is done with the iconic Impala

Chevrolet

The Chevrolet Impala became an iconic American model in its time, with an incredibly sleek mermaid tail design at the rear. It was the dream of many boys and girls, women and men. However, in modern times, General Motors is trying to get rid of unprofitable models, and the Impala, which has lost its charm over the years, has been laid off.

According to The Detroit News, on February 27, the last Chevrolet Impala left the factory in Hamtramck, Michigan.

The production of this model began in the distant 1958. During this time, the model has changed 10 generations, but its popularity has faded over the past 15 years: back in 2006-2007, GM sold 290-300 thousand Impalas a year, but in 2019 the model sold only 44,978 copies. A significant share of Impala sales in previous years was provided by state and corporate orders - in the zero years this model was actively used by the police and taxis. Recently, however, the American police prefer crossovers and SUVs, and taxi companies - crossovers and minivans.

Other models were also laid off due to the closure of this plant, as well as enterprises in Lordstown, Ohio, and Oshawa, Canada: Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6 and XTS, Chevrolet Cruze and Volt.

“The market has changed dramatically, demand for sedans has declined, and we have adapted to customer needs,” said Steve Majoros, head of marketing for Chevrolet.

General Motors is investing $2.2 billion in the Hamtramck plant, after which it will produce only electric models. Among them are the 1000-horsepower GMC Hummer electric SUV, as well as the Cruise Origin autonomous electric taxi.
